Thought Log 002: The Dissonant Shell

by Koda

Intrinsically, our social roles are reflections of who we are. I understand that some of these roles might get distorted through various mediums—through doctrines, beliefs, and ideas broadcasted from countless external sources. But ultimately, they are all still manifestations of our own choices as sentient, sensitive individuals. No matter how absurd we might become within those social constraints, it remains a representation of our unique individuality.

But what happens when those roles are completely stripped away?

Without them, all individual representations in this world cease to represent us. Everything becomes an empty, meaningless shell. Social roles are, in a way, substantive to the very fabric of life itself. If you remove them, what is left behind? Nothing but a name and bare existence. Ideas and thoughts would scatter, and principles would spill across an unsupported floor. What could you possibly hold onto in the face of such a forceful detachment? Perhaps nothing more than a dissonant, meaningless song.

This leads me to wonder: does my current life actually reflect the values I truly believe in?

I can't be entirely sure. Sometimes, I still doubt the presence and purpose of every object and being in this world. Nothing truly convinces me of an absolute truth, nor of what constitutes ultimate evil. Everything feels entirely too representative, impossible to use as a true metric for life itself. Every single event is merely a cause-and-effect born from the past, and we cannot judge something we never truly comprehended in the first place.

Which leads to how humanity eventually constructed a mechanism: separating the cause from the effect in order to judge what is 'true.' Because if they aren't separated, every related concept and truth eventually becomes a chaotic blur, leaving nothing able to be evaluated. Crimes wouldn't be judged because we wouldn't know the root cause, and virtues wouldn't be praised because we wouldn't understand the reasoning. Isn't that an inherently ironic mechanism? We slice reality into pieces just so we can make sense of it.

So, if I ask myself whether my life reflects the values I believe in... the truth is, those values no longer hold a substantive weight in my life. My principle right now is simply to walk through this fleeting flicker of time, even while doubting everything I see. Someday, I will understand the meaning of my life without having to cling to values that remain so inherently ambiguous.

And if no one is there to witness my life, would I still want to live it this way?

Yes. As I realized earlier, I will keep living my life even if there are no binding values left holding me down. The witness to my life isn't anyone else; it is myself. My footprints will eventually fade away, regardless of whether someone walks beside me or not. But there is one thing I must remember: even when those footprints are no longer visible, the process of making them remains etched deep within my soul.
