Thought Log 003: The Resonance of Silence
by Koda
Is there a space in this world that truly accepts my silence?
To observe the atmosphere within silence is to find a medium where the soul softly resonates amidst the monotony of the world. The sheer madness of life’s tragedies sometimes creeps in little by little, happening in the blink of an eye before we even have the chance to dodge it. In the middle of that crossfire, silence becomes a concrete solution when you are already driven too mad by the process. I see silence as a form of remembrance—a monument to the fleeting mementos of life that pass by like the rustling wind.
We don't live merely for the sake of social formalities; making sense of it all is an absolute necessity if we are to understand our own essence as sentient human beings. We need to map out that space in the corner of our minds. Picture it as the very last document on a stacked shelf. It’s a document you find at the very end of a story, stamped with a bold, capitalized title, practically begging you to open it just once and weep alongside it. That document doesn't even need to be filled with words; an empty page is enough. You don't need to search for its meaning; just let yourself fill it with a story steeped in your own sweat and tears. And once you no longer need it, put it back at the bottom of the pile and smile. Smile because you have been strong enough to endure this ephemeral life.
You don’t have to wait for the world to hand you that narrow space, that empty document. Let yourself construct that world within your own mind. By doing so, even in the absolute center of the world's deafening noise and chaos, you can still be present. You can still hold a moment of silence with the one entity that truly needs to be spoken to: yourself.
I feel that silence is an inevitability for every human being; we are born into it. You and I are already intimately familiar with silence. Even before we were born, there was the inevitability of quiet. The silent sanctuary of the womb was exactly where you were meant to be, just as the quiet of the grave is where you will inevitably end up. I don't mean to sound like I'm preaching, but silence is the answer to all of your problems. Your brain and your soul will scream if you don't allow them to stop and rest, even for just a fraction of a second. Silence is a liberating force that empowers you to shatter the world. You don't need to seek escapism through other mediums. Just you, and only you. The world possesses a thousand and one ways to keep you busy, but you hold millions of ways to just pause, simply by talking to yourself. You have to paint that canvas on your own; don't let the world move the brush for you. You just need to speak inward.
There was a time when I felt the constant need to validate every single one of my actions to others, whether through a WhatsApp status or an Instagram note. It was as if I desperately wanted to be reassured about things that were, relatively speaking, completely unimportant. I spoke to the world, expecting a reply, even when I already knew the answers myself. Looking back, I'm baffled by that state of mind. Why did the world seem to demand that I broadcast my story? Aren't we supposed to be the observers, not the bards? The world should be guiding us, not tearing our characters apart; the world is the one that should be reciting the poetry. Yet, it feels as though the world leaves no room for us to just sit in silence without expecting something in return. A system like that is genuinely sickening. You don't need to seek validation through those external "windows." Can't you see? There is a door right inside your heart. Just knock on it, and you'll realize that this massive, intimidating world is nothing but a speck of dust compared to the universe inside you.
This anomaly is truly fascinating—a paradox of the soul, I'd call it. We aren't obligated to speak, yet you can uncover millions of answers purely through silence. I’ve found that the incessant chirping of the world gets distorted in the fog of sanity (and yes, I consider talking to oneself a true form of sanity). Your inner self is incredibly vast, and yet you let the world lull you into caring only about external achievements. What a profound irony. You talk to everyone else, to every other medium, but never to yourself. Silence is not something you need to fear; in fact, it speaks to you softly, in its own way. It weeps with you. It smiles at your triumphs.
I used to be trapped in that phase, right when I first started trying to be a "human" in my early college days. Being naturally quiet, I yearned so deeply for companionship; I just wanted to be heard, to be seen in that moment. But that desperate search only brought consecutive waves of sadness. Not a single person paid any mind. I was dominated only by the harsh reprimand of disappointment, a pursuit that led me nowhere.
But ultimately, I discovered the true essence of silence on a particular night in the middle of my first semester. It was as if my heart, shattered by loneliness, dragged me into a confrontation with myself. We talked—slowly at first, and then full of anger. I created a space for "me" and "myself" to converse, to draft scenarios together. In that exact moment, I realized just how crucial it is to talk to yourself. The echoes resonated, pulsating with a self-awareness that slowly began to take shape. As I reflected on what went wrong with my approach to making friends, a sudden rush of tears fell—tears of longing for this very feeling of internal connection. It fortified me. It forced me to introspect and truly look at my own personality. In the end, the most reliable friend we will ever have is ourselves.
Throughout this journey of life, the world actually never hid that silent space from you. You were just being too rigid with yourself. The world is perfectly capable of listening gently to your story without you ever having to raise your voice. Just find everything you need within yourself, and whisper it to the world: "I found the answer."
Silence and existence are inherently bound to one another; the presence of one demands the other. Silence arrives when you contemplate your existence in this world, and your existence truly begins when silence becomes a familiar comfort as your soul is breathed into your body. Your existence craves that solitary space, and allowing it to reflect will make it appreciate every single element that was ever brought into this world.
We don’t actually need to speak to be heard. That space already exists.
Just knock on the door.
